Zebra Plant has the boldest leaf in the shop: deep glossy green striped with bright white veins, every leaf looking hand-drawn. When it is happy it tops itself with a spike of yellow bracts that holds for weeks. Nothing else on the shelf reads like it.
The honest part: this one has opinions. It wants its soil kept evenly moist, its air humid, and no cold drafts - and it communicates. Let it dry out and it wilts flat like it has given up, then stands back up within hours of a drink; leave it thirsty for days and it starts dropping lower leaves instead. Give it the steady routine and it is a spectacular, fast-growing plant. Skip the routine and it will file its complaints in writing, on the floor, one leaf at a time.
Why You'll Love It
- White-veined leaves that look hand-painted
- Long-lasting yellow flower spikes
- Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs
- Tells you exactly when it is thirsty - no guessing
Plant Care
- Light: Bright indirect light; weak light means leggy growth and no flowers
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist; never let it dry out fully
- Difficulty: Moderate - rewards a steady routine, sulks without one
- Growth: Upright and bushy; pinch tips to keep it full
- Humidity: Loves humidity; a pebble tray or a spot near other plants helps
- Pet Friendly: Yes - listed non-toxic to cats and dogs
