Staghorn Fern grows two kinds of fronds: flat round shield fronds that hug its base, and long forked antler fronds that arc out like a mounted trophy. It is the plant people mount on a board and hang like art, and it looks every bit as good as that sounds.
In nature it grows on tree trunks, drinking through its fronds and roots alike. Indoors, keep it in its pot or mount it when you are ready. Either way it asks for bright indirect light and a good soak, then time to dry.
Why You'll Love It
- Antlers: forked fronds unlike any other fern
- Can be mounted on a board as living wall art
- Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs
- A conversation piece that is easier than it looks
Plant Care
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light
- Water: Soak the root ball, then let it dry out before the next soak
- Difficulty: Easy once you learn the soak
- Growth: Epiphytic; shield fronds layer over the base as it ages
- Humidity: Enjoys humidity and a misting now and then
- Pet Friendly: Yes - listed non-toxic to cats and dogs
