Burle Marx Flame Monstera is named for the way its leaves mature: young leaves start out whole, then cut deeper and deeper into narrow, flame-like ribbons as the plant climbs. It is one of the most sculptural monsteras there is, and it looks less like a houseplant and more like a green flame frozen mid-flicker.
It is a true climber, so give it a moss pole or trellis early and it will reward you with bigger leaves and deeper cuts. Named after Roberto Burle Marx, the Brazilian landscape architect, it carries the same bold, architectural energy as his gardens.
Why You'll Love It
- Leaves mature into deeply cut, flame-shaped ribbons
- Thick, rich green foliage with a strong architectural presence
- A climbing monstera that gets better with a moss pole
- Still genuinely uncommon in US plant shops
Plant Care
- Light: Bright indirect light; the deepest leaf cuts come with the best light
- Water: Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; keep it lightly moist, never soggy
- Difficulty: Advanced (a collector plant that wants support and steady humidity)
- Growth: Strong climber; young leaves start entire and fenestrate with maturity
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, 50% or more, for its best growth
- Pet Friendly: No - toxic to cats and dogs if chewed
Botanical Name: Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame'
Also Known As: Burle Marx Flame, BMF
Good For: Collectors, bright rooms, moss-pole climbers, statement corners
Each plant is naturally unique, so size, shape, and coloring may vary slightly from the photos. Young plants may arrive with mostly whole leaves; the flame cuts develop as the plant climbs and matures.
